Season 2011 > The Hawks and Kokoda

Hawthorn Football Club is proud to to acknowledge the battle of Kokoda in their Round 11 match on Sunday 5 June against Fremantle at the MCG.
The Kokoda campaign is one of the most significant battles in Australia’s wartime history.
The match will support the efforts of the Kokoda Track Foundation in helping to raise money for the health and education of those currently living on the Track. The Kokoda Track Foundation provides health and education programs for children on the track who often struggle to receive basic medical care and schooling - a basic social need which is often denied through lack of funding.
Hawthorn Football Club, under Senior Coach Alastair Clarkson, has trekked the Kokoda Track on three occasions and the trip now forms an important part of the cultural induction of new players to the Club. The Hawks have embraced into their culture the four pillars of Kokoda; courage, mateship, sacrifice and endurance and the Club has sent 124 Club representatives to the Track including coaches, players, board members, corporate partners and administrative staff on its three expeditions.
