once released,
take on a life of their own.
It is universal
And timeless.
The desire to
Communicate
That which is
Within.
Those are the very thoughts that have driven me for most of my life. If my paintings touch emotions, invite conversation, or thought, then I guess my Journey will ‘take on a life of its own’.
I have painted for most of my life.
1964 - I was a child of eight when I had my first contact with the use of Oil Paint. My stepfather -A Dutchman whose hobby it was to paint in oils in the style of the ‘Old Dutch Masters’- sat me down with:
Oil Paints, Brushes, a Palette, small jar of turps & a rag, a cane-covered wine bottle, and a small canvas.
His only words to me that day were, “Paint it!”. I did… and I have NEVER stopped.
My appreciation of 'Fine Art' and the high Renaissance Period was born. The play of light (chiroscuro) and luminous glow so evident in the fabrics and draperies sent me on a jouney that continues to this day.
As a teenager I decided that I wanted to hang 'Old Masters' on my walls, to have them close by to enjoy.
I did not want to hang Posters, I wanted something as close to the ‘real thing’ as possible. What a silly thought! And what would they look like without the wear and tear of the centuries. That was the dream!

A copy of painting by Vermeer - Lady with Pearl Earring
I painted this when I was nineteen. Oil on Masonite - Monochrome then Glazed
This was the second painting I produced during five years of study with the teacher who unlocked the mystery of some of the techniques used by the 'Old Masters'
I would like to share those techniques,as I have interpreted them, in the hope that this will foster the practice of this ancient craft, in a world where instant results seem to be preferred.
are the only qualities that are needed
