From humble beginnings in 1877… the Dahlsen family has been dedicated to providing quality building materials. To this day, our business is family owned and operated and with a new generation at the helm we are striving more than ever to deliver state of the art building and renovation solutions. Dahlsens is dedicated to continually focus on the sustainable development of local communities. |
Our History
John Christian Dahlsen, who emigrated to Australia in his early twenties, founded the company in 1877 when he began to sell mining tools to gold prospectors at Bairnsdale, East Gippsland. Soon J.C. Dahlsen & Co flourished selling timber and hardware to the local community.
But before long, the company began to operate its own steamships & layed a major role in shipping which was then the most widely used form of transport from Melbourne to Gippsland, due to the lack of roads.
From humble beginnings in a tin shed, the company continued to expand and under the guidance of Percy Dahlsen, a large department store covering two acres & thirty departments was developed in Bairnsdale.
Slowly, but surely expansion continued - firstly in Gippsland, then much further afield. In recent times Dahlsens growth has accelerated yet, after five generations, the company is still family owned and operated.
